About "Starvation" (6:15 min.)

”Hunger is the worst that can happen to a human being," Salle says in this chapter. In Theresienstadt, the food rations are few, small, and of very poor quality. This means that the prisoners are always hungry and always hunting for more food. After six months, something happens that changes the situation for the Danes considerably – they begin to receive packages from home with food and vitamins. The packages not only help to fight hunger and sickness; they also provide the opportunity to trade for things that make living in the camp more bearable – extra clothing, blankets, or new shoes.
