About "The Commission" (6:54 min.)
On 23 June 1944, a commission with representatives from the International Red Cross and Danish diplomats visit the camp. The commission’s task is to inspect conditions for prisoners in the camp. For this occasion, the whole camp goes through a beautification process in order to appear as a much better place than it actually is. And on this day, all prisoners receive strict orders not to make any negative comments to the commission members – this could be punished with death. When the commission arrives, Theresienstadt looks like a stage set, with orchestra, playground, proper food and shops full of goods.
