Et medlem af Andokhin-familien, som blev arresteret i 1930’erne, beretter om familiens udfordringer.

In February my parents…and our entire family were dekulakized – expelled from the agrarian commune, deprived of voting rights, thrown out of our house, left with no means of subsistence. We weren’t exiled, although my father repeatedly asked the authorities to send us, along with the other kulaks, to a special settlement. There we would have had the right to work and earn some money and thus had some kind of life. But I repeat, our family was not exiled.

Apparently it was part of some kind of class struggle, making the victims stay where they were, to be jeered at, hounded, and terrorized by the local inhabitants and by the authorities…
Our family, our huge family, had nowhere to live, nothing to eat, no place to work… We scraped along until spring; with the thaw we dug a pit in the courtyard, and the whole family lived in this pit.

In the spring of 1932 we were given a plan for sowing grain. Obviously, the man who gave us the plan knew very well that it would not be followed, not because we didn’t want to but because there were no draft animals, there was no plow, there were no seeds.

That autumn, for failing to follow the plan for delivering bread to the state, Father was sentenced to 2½ years in prison. And earlier the same autumn, our mother was sentenced to 10 years because, with the permission of one of the team leaders, she had gathered five pounds (that’s what the sentence said) of ears of grain on a field for grazing cattle.

The local activists made deliberate efforts to wipe out the whole family. We realized that very clearly in the course of our hand, wretched life. They took away from us the alms the small children got begging “for Christ’s sake,” they took any instrument that could be used to earn anything… We weren’t allowed in school, we weren’t eager to attend. After the dekulakization none of us were able to finish even the elementary classes.
